Just a few weeks after the mid-season departure of National Lacrosse League commissioner, Nick Sakiewicz, and a single day after he was hired as the Arizona Coyotes’ first Chief Business Officer, NLL Deputy Commissioner, Jessica Berman, has confirmed that she too will be leaving lacrosse in the coming months.

Earlier today, the National Women’s Soccer League announced that they had hired Berman as their new commissioner. She starts on April 20th.

NWSL BOG member, Sophie Savage, said in the league’s announcement, “We’re thrilled to have Jessica serve as the next commissioner of the NWSL as we embark on our 10th season of play.

“This process was incredibly collaborative throughout and we want to thank the players for their involvement. Jessica’s extensive professional background, her commitment to elevating diverse voices in the sports industry, and her vision for the future of our league, made her the right fit for this incredibly important position.”

Soon after appearing on CBS Mornings, Berman tweeted the following message, “We finish up one chapter @nll in April, while moving ahead to the next exciting one soon with @NWSL. Thanks @CBSMornings for the kickoff & to all for the warm welcome! Lots to learn, a lot of listening, & great days ahead on & off the pitch! #NWSL.”

Berman has served as the NLL’s second in charge since August of 2019 after spending 13 years in the National Hockey League in various high-profile executive roles.

The NLL has yet to announce Berman’s departure, but Matt Hutchings, COO and EVP at Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and chair of the NLL board of governors, was included in the NWSL announcement. He stated, “We want to thank Jessica for the exemplary work and the leadership she has provided us during her tenure with the NLL.

“While we are disappointed to see her leave, we know she will always be a friend and supporter of our league and the sport. We look forward to seeing her progress personally and professionally for years to come and wish her the best of luck.”

As previously confirmed, Sakiewicz will remain in an advisory role with the NLL until June 30th of this year.

The 2021/22 NLL regular season is slated to conclude on April 30th, the playoffs likely ending a month later.
