The Ontario Junior Lacrosse League has announced that the 2022 Minto Cup will be played at the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ontario from August 22-29.

The last team to be presented the prestigious trophy were the Orangeville Northmen in 2019. The four-team tourney had been placed on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is back again this summer.

Brampton hosted the Minto Cup as recently as 2017, when the Six Nations Arrows defeated the Coquitlam Adanacs in the final. The Minto was last fought for at the CAA Centre in 2009, when the hometown Brampton Excelsiors were bettered 2-1 by the Northmen in the series finale.

The OJLL also unveiled a 2022 Minto Cup logo as part of today’s announcement.

“We couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to host the Minto Cup this year,” said OJLL Commissioner Mark Grimes in Tuesday’s announcement. “It has been a long road back for our athletes and fans but Ontario is ready to defend the Minto Cup at home — and we can’t think of a better place to do it than in the great lacrosse City of Brampton.”

Last summer, all three of Canada’s Junior A leagues – the OJLL, British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League, and Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League – held condensed seasons while pandemic-related restrictions slowly started to be lifted throughout the country. The St. Catharines Athletics (OJLL), St. Albert Miners (RMLL) and Adanacs (BCJALL) were crowned their leagues’ 2022 champs.

In 2019, the Northmen were joined by the Adanacs, Victoria Shamrocks and Okotoks Raiders in the national finals. The event was hosted at the Langley Events Centre in British Columbia.

The post-season finalists from the host province, plus other two leagues’ champions are awarded entry to the Minto Cup.
